Ant Encounters: Interaction Networks and Colony Behavior (Primers in Complex Systems)

483

How do ant colonies get anything done, when no one is in charge? An ant colony operates without a central control or hierarchy, and no ant directs another. Instead, ants decide what to do based on the rate, rhythm, and pattern of individual encounters and interactions–resulting in a dynamic network that coordinates the functions of the colony. Ant Encounters provides a revealing and accessible look into ant behavior from this complex systems perspective. Focusing on the moment-to-moment beh…

When I read the title I knew it was going to be ants.

I just read this awesome book [1] about how ants function like decentralized networks. They aren’t all subservient oppressed workers like they were shown to be in the Antz movie (besides maybe the ants who work in garbage duty who collect dead ants/colony waste). They actually all work independently, mostly reacting to chemical signals, all for the greater good of their colony.

They can actually count the number of ants going out to harvest food and if that number starts to drop (because they were killed for example) then other workers inside the colony will switch tasks and go out hunting. Each remembers where they got food for roughly one day before they forget, but they still manage to remember where the food is for years thanks to collective colony memory (by constantly going to the spot and creating paths for others to follow).

I could go on… 🙂

There are lots of applications to computer science from this stuff (my profession). There has already been real-world improvemnts to algorithms thanks to research into ant colony networks.
