This this this. Seriously. I just posted a response on a higher up comment about my gripe with the Top 100 Guitarists that Rolling Stone likes to do.

A great academic stance to take on this whole situation would be looking at Bordieux’s theory of the habitus and how that affects musical taste and opinion (a la Carl Wilson’s book Let’s Talk About Love , which is a great read and I highly recommend). Part of the top lists are about credibility from other critics. Would someone take your list seriously if all three Jimi albums or all three Cream albums didn’t make the Top 100? If a Beatles album wasn’t in the Top 5?
