The only boss the Alliance cant kill(r/wow)
This all comes from the Illidan Novel, so if you planned on reading it and want to avoid spoilers, stop reading. Otherwise continue.
So a couple months before we busted up the Black Temple, Illidan was scheming for ways to truly fuck over the Burning Legion. He also had an army of Demon Hunters who were trained, but yet to be battle tested. On top of that, Maiev was hunting for a moment where he’d drop his guard, so she could kill/capture him. So that’s the general context.
One day Maiev and her Night Elf troops get a tip that Illidan will be casting an incredibly dangerous/powerful spell, and he’ll be vulnerable in the process. So Maiev and her crew show up, and try to attack him and his handfull of sorcerrors who are helping him. As soon as they attack, Fel Orcs ambush them and Illidan opens some smaller portals to bring in Naga reinforcements. Maiev’s crew is all mortally wounded or dead, and she’s captured. And the souls of the wounded and dead are sucked into Illidan’s portal spell to fuel it. Turns out, Illidan was counting on her to attack to fuel his big-ass-portal.
Maiev is shuffled away, and Illidan opens another small portal to call in his new Demon Hunter army (assumably he left them out of the fight with Maiev because many of them were night elves and wouldn’t have been willing to attack her). He then tells them that he and the Demon Hunters are going in. The Demon Hunters don’t really have a clue what’s going on but they follow orders. (Illidian never shares his plans ahead of time, too many spies).
They go in the big ass epic portal, and turns out it goes halfway across the entire fucking universe to Nathreza, the homeworld of the Nathrezim (aka, Dreadlords). They notice this other world is saturated with the energy of the Twisting Nether, Fel energy is abundant and almost intoxicating to Demons… and Demon Hunters. They’re pretty pumped up, and Illidan commands them to attack a nearby city. They execute the attack brilliantly, and Illidan steals some ancient Dreadlord records from their most sacred library. Later it will be revealed this record contains the location of the Draenei homeworld, Argus, where Kil’Jaden is hiding.
At this point, the Burning Legion is starting to hear alarmbells (figuratively) and think some shit might be going down on the Dreadlord homeworld, and they open portals to send in reinforcements. And they’re not wrong, the Demon Hunters are fucking the Dreadlord’s shit up pretty bad. But they can’t fight forever, and they know if they stick around they’ll be overwhelmed.
Illidan orders the retreat to their original big-ass-epic-portal going back to Outland… but they deliberately take just long enough getting to the portal to let as many Burning Legion reinforcements get to Nathreza as possible and chase them. Then Illidan orders the Demon Hunters to go back home, and from the Outland-side of the portal Illidan closes the portal.
Now some background on this epic-interplanetary-portal… it’s similar in design to the ones Nerhzul spawned across Draenor… and when those portals closed, Draenor kinda blew up, hence Outland.
Illidan knows this. In fact, he exploits this by designing his portal to close, and put all the destructive force on the Nathreza-side of the portal. And the fucking slams it shut as hard as he can.
So yeah… Nathreza go boom. And since the planet was saturated with the energy of the Twisting Nether, those fuckers didn’t just die. They died permanently.
In other words, Illidan donned the sandpaper condom and went to town on their collective asses. So if you’re a Dreadlord who was lucky enough to be off-world when that genocide happened, you’re going to be retarded-pissed at Illidan for blowing up your homeworld and basically turning you into a member of an endangered species.
Illidan planned to eventually do the same to the planet Argus but right before doing so… we (the players) showed up. So… yeah. Our bad. But in our defense, the Burning Legion tricked us into doing so, as revenge for Nathreza.
