Undoubtedly the most famous person in this area is Peter Singer, a utilitarian, who wrote Animal Liberation.
Tom Regan, a deontologist, is also famous.
Personally, I really like this article by Alastair Norcross, whom I think hits the nail on the head. Even better than Singer, IMHO.
