Security is awesome and we want newcomers! Welcome!
I’m a security engineer. I’m also a hacker. They are related disciplines, but not necessarily the same thing. If you want to be really good at helping companies keep their systems safe, it’s a lot easier if you know how to attack stuff. And hacking is fun! So it’s a good place to start.
Learn everything you can about Linux. There’s…. well there’s a lot to learn. You better get started. Most of the important computers in the enterprise space run Linux, so you gotta know how they work to make them safe, and hackers tend to build their tools on Linux. Install it and use it as your daily driver. Learning about operating systems and how they work is really important. I learned Linux by trying to do complicated stuff with it, screwing up, and having to fix my mistakes. While you’re learning Linux, learn about SSH and how it authenticates users. It’s a good place to start learning about crypto and authentication, and a good example of how to do things the right way.
