I’m not a manager (yet), but I think you should quickly set up regular one on ones and try to determine where your reports want to go in their careers, and find ways to assist them on that path. Everyone ultimately wants something different. If they’re all high-functioning and the team is operating smoothly, your goal is to retain that team and keep people interested. (And keep upper management from splitting that team up at all costs! A well-gelled team is hard to create and should be defended. If a project ends, push to have them together on another project, rather than disbanding.)

It’s really easy to just assume that things are going well because all external signs point in that direction, but then suddenly you get a completely unexpected two weeks’ notice from one of your top people because, ultimately, they were bored. You want to keep ahead of that sort of thing. (By the way, that blog I linked is full of great advice for your general situation, and he wrote a very good book on the subject.)
