According to you, what three books and/or academic papers define 21st century philosophy?(r/askphilosophy)
I don’t think the papers that currently define 21st century philosophy were published in the 21st century. That said, three influential 21st century publications in analytic philosophy are:
Williamson’s Knowledge and Its Limits — published in 2000 (okay, it’s not the 21st century, but it’s close enough). This book has set the framework for much of the work in epistemology since its publication.
Fine’s “The Question of Realism” — published in 2001. This paper influenced a whole generation of metaphysicians to look for new conceptual tools for metaphysics. It led to the current explosion of material on fundamentality and grounding.
Parfit’s On What Matters — published 2011. It’s hard to overstate the impact that this book has already had (in draft form) on ethics. It should continue to dominate the discussion for a long time.
