TIL that Mark Twain hated Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”: “Every time I read [it] I want to dig her up and beat her over the skull with her own shin-bone.”(r/todayilearned)
Except this whole thing is probably false. The article gets this info from a book published in 2009. I don’t know how well the book is sourced, but Austen isn’t mentioned at all on his wikiquote page(which has a strict sourcing policy), she’s not even mentioned once on the talk page.
So, as per usual, don’t trust quotes on the internet.
* For those wondering, dspm90’s quote is a paraphrase of this one: “Jane Austen’s books, too, are absent from this library. Just that one omission alone would make a fairly good library out of a library that hadn’t a book in it.” – Mark Twain, Following the Equator [Ch. 62]
fetzy’s and the one in the OP article are still unverified.
