Question for Metal Drummers(r/drums)
If you can get a teacher, that would be the best possible way to start.
If you cant get a teacher, start learning and playing all the rudiments on a pillow, doing them on a pillow will seem like the most annoying thing at first, but believe me it is the most beneficial thing you can do for yourself.
Get a book called Stick Control and play through that. (the first few pages are really the only important ones)
Also a book called Groove Essientals – by Tommy Igoe is great for drumset grooves, comes with play along tracks, and should help you learning how to read a chart and play along to a recording.
Once you think you feel comfortable playing some standard rock grooves, break out an aerosmith or Ac/Dc CD, and play along to it. It’s really fun to play along to a nice easy song.
Also, don’t forget there are an endless amount of free drum material out there on the internet, check youtube, check the sidebar (it has a lot of things that will help you).
If you have the money i would suggest joining a paid online drumming school, like drumeo.com , or jpbouvetmusic.com
Also, if you have the money, buy a few instructional dvds, some jojo mayer, benny greb, tommy igoe, they are all phenomenal teachers.
Hope some of this helped, Good Luck!
