What incorrect things were you taught in school?(r/AskReddit)
I may have had the worst AP English teacher of all time. This lady was really old and a bit crazy. No bullshit, at least 50 percent of the time we had in class was just her rambling and telling boring ass stories about her life.
One day, she gave everyone a copy of The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells and asked us to write a paper on it. In case you haven’t read the book, it’s a sci-fi novel about a scientist who finds a way to turn himself invisible and does a bunch of weird shit. Go look at the picture on Amazon, it’s important for the story.
On the day we got our papers back, she seemed very upset. She looked around at us as if we were retarded and she was extremely disappointed with us. She let out this huge sigh, then said “Guys, I don’t think any of you understood the book. He’s not actually invisible. It’s supposed to be a metaphor for racism and how the protagonist feels as a black man in post-slavery America”. We then argued about whether or not he was actually invisible for a while until she figured out her mistake.
Yeah. She thought she gave us Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man. Click on that Amazon link if you haven’t already. It has H.G. Wells, a famous sci-fi author, in huge fucking letters on top of a picture of a man who is invisible. It’s 192 pages long. Ellison’s book is over 600 pages long.
