TIL one of the Books of Mormon was translated by its founder from an Egyptian scroll, purportedly written by Abraham himself, that was presumed lost in a museum fire. The scroll was rediscovered in 1966 and was shown to be a common funerary text.(r/todayilearned)
Their history with various documents is fascinating, including the church’s purchases of letters and other documents from or relating to Joseph Smith.
They buy them and hide them away permanently, even forgeries.
In fact, there have been murders related to these Mormon documents.
They buy historical documents that appear believable, even if they might be forged. Smith was known to be involved in some odd practices, and was even tricked into “translating” some “uncovered” engraved plates that were, in fact, made for the express purpose of tricking him.
Nice people in my experience, but their origins are full of strange stories.
